Could California be split into six separate states? One Silicon Valley venture capitalist hopes to put a plan before voters this year which would do just that. The California Secretary of State’s office has given approval to Silicon Valley venture capitalist Tim Draper to begin collecting petition signatures for a measure that would split California into six, new, separate states. The 2014 deadline to collect 807,615 signatures is July 18; he may instead put the measure on the 2016 ballot.
New details have emerged in the March 3 raids of both Pop-N-Cork locations in Turlock by the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department as part of the investigation into the murder of Korey Kauffman. Along with the raids of the businesses, the homes of Pop-N-Cork owner Baljit Singh Athwal (Bobby) and his brother Daljit Singh Athwal (Dee) were searched the same morning. Law enforcement came in with guns pointed, scaring Baljit Athwal’s children, including his 8-year-old son who had to see a school counselor, he said.
Baljit Singh Athwal, a co-owner of Pop-N-Cork Liquors and an alleged person of interest in the Korey Kauffman murder case, protested with family and friends Saturday outside of the Turlock Public Safety Facility at the corner of W. Olive and N. Broadway avenues. Touting signs reading “We want justice” and “We want FBI,” Athwal explained that the protest was made in an effort to clear his name in the Kauffman case and “seek justice.” Family there supporting Baljit and his brother Daljit, also an alleged person of interest in the case, explained their frustrations with the way police have handled the situation.
