Ineffective Media Forms vs. Internet
Newspapers - The most expensive per impression form of advertisement. Space is limited. Small ads are overlooked and big ads are expensive. Newspaper circulation is declining and misses most of a business’ market. Potential customers have to pay to see a business ad. A business’ ad impression is still hit or miss to even the few people who might read the paper as it is only read (maybe) one time and that is it. Potential customers who commute out of the area get a lot of local news and announcements for free on the internet from wherever they might be working.
Radio - A business’ ad is a nuisance during someone’s form of entertainment. Time is limited. Ads are expensive and consistent. Constant campaigns must take place over many different stations and channels to possibly be effective. Despite a great expensive campaign, it is still hit or miss. Potential customers who commute out of the area will never hear or see a business’ ad on this media form.
Billboards - Exposure depends on potential customers going out and driving by it. Billboards are expensive and usually require a long term commitment. Billboards act the same as internet banners to help brand a business but require potential customers to still look a business up later on a different media form, often the internet.
Magazines - There’s a small amount of readers who may view a business’ ad. Ads are expensive and often ad spaces are not very flexible. Ads must be general as they can’t be updated from week to week or even month to month.
Direct Mailings - “Junk mail”, that is what a business’ ad will be. The quality of future customers is lowered along with a business’ image. People expect a discount which adds to the total cost of an advertisement here. There is no reason to give a business’ ad any “shelf life” as there is no useful content to keep these mailings from being thrown out right away.
