The Modesto Bee gave their opinion on who they think is best suited to “lead” Turlock and why.
The Modesto Bee is a popular media form and has its ear to the ground. This newspaper gets more “leads” than our own local media forms and gets more feedback with their tens of thousands of readers’ opinions.
Though their 2008 endorsement has been said to be the “kiss of death” for whoever they choose, it still does mean a lot and they influence many with their opinionated explanations.
The “kiss of death” phrase comes from the many wrong picks by the Bee lately.
In 2006, the Modesto Bee endorsed the predicted winning Mayoral Candidate John Lazar. Lazar did win, and he won big over Kurt Vander Weide and David Fransen with around 60% of the votes! The Bee also endorsed Billy Wallen and Mary Jackson in 2006. They finished 6th and 7th with around 8% of the votes each. The Modesto Bee also endorsed Measure K (transportation tax increase) but it did not pass. The failure was attributed to Turlock’s campaign against the poorly planned proposal where we would not get our fair share of the taxes back.
In November of 2007, the Bee endorsed Michael Crowell versus Dr. Robert Santos in the T.I.D. District 4 race. Dr. Robert Santos was victorious with around 60% of the votes.
Another highly contested race was held in June of 2008 when former sheriff Les Weidman was challenged by an “underdog” Vito Chiesa for Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors, District 2. The Bee endorsed Weidman but Chiesa won the race with over 58% of the votes.
This 2008 endorsement comes with an interesting opinion piece. It almost seems contradictory. There are some good points and then some, well… not so clear points. The clearest point made was that Turlock’s current City Council is not working towards accomplishments versus the past Turlock Councils’ perceived greatness.
The Modesto Bee endorses Mary Jackson and Kurt Vander Weide.
There has been a lot of talk around Turlock about whether Measure S (the transportation tax increase for Stanislaus County) will pass. The Modesto Bee also endorses this ballot item.

We will see if this kiss proves to be desired or detested after November 4, 2008.

I think you are confusing the word endorsement with prediction. If you predict the outcome of an election, you can be right or wrong depending on the election outcome. If you endorse someone, you are merely choosing a favorite. Your favorite may win or lose, but he or she is still your favorite. If I like the Giants, and they lose, was I wrong to be a Giants fan??
