The Columbia Center at Columbia Park was renamed the Marty Yerby Recreational Facility after former Councilman Marty Yerby passed away on December 30, 2006. The sign has been in the works for a while and will finally be unveiled during a ceremony to be held today, November 21, 2008 at 11am.
The last minute notice and arrangements were to fit everyone’s schedules. Widow Betty Yerby has been waiting patiently for several months for this so after the sign came in late Tuesday, city staff worked quickly to accommodate a Friday unveiling for Betty Yerby.
Marty Yerby was a major advocate and contributor to Turlock.
Marty Yerby served his community in many ways: as a Little League coach, as a fund raiser for Turlock Youth Football, as a member and President of the Turlock Westside Neighborhood Association, he served on the Turlock City Council for 8 years and as Vice Mayor for a year, he was a member of the SEAPA community, he served on the Turlock Mosquito Abatement Board and as chairman of that board; He was instrumental in the installation of new play ground equipment at Wakefield School; he served on the Turlock Together Board, was involved with Turlock Leadership, Turlock Beautification Board.
He was one of few people to receive the Rotary Paul Harris Award from both the morning and noontime Rotary Clubs. He was honored with the Humanitarian of the Year in 2006. He served on the committee for the Bond Issue for Turlock School Board.
He was a charter member of Monte Vista Chapel and served as head usher and on the Greeters-Welcome committee for many years. He was also a member of the Denair Nazarene Church.
