Turlock’s new life-sized bronze statue of John Mitchell will be unveiled Friday, December 05, 2008 at 5pm before the Lights on Parade begins at 7pm.
Mayor and Turlock Centennial Chair John Lazar will lead the statue unveiling ceremony in Central Park located on Golden State + Main Street, the original train depot where it all started for Turlock.
The statue was created by Oakdale artist Betty Saletta who has done a couple statues Emanuel Hospital and other cities such as Hughson. Dr. Rob Santos paid the up-front fee of $7,000 before the Turlock Centennial Committee had funding to get the statue started in time. The statue was reported to cost $70,000 when the Turlock City Council approved a “loan” to the Turlock Centennial Committee in December 2007.
City of Turlock crews installed the statue on Thursday morning while trying to keep the statue covered until the unveiling ceremony on Friday.
