After scoring three goals in an exhibition win Sunday, the Warriors scored a single goal in the seventh minute and held off the attacking Cal State Bakersfield offense to come away with a 1-0 victory in an exihibition at Warrior Stadium against the Division I Roadrunners.
"I think our boys gained some confidence today," said Warriors head coachDana Taylor. "They took one step closer to preparing for our home-opener Saturday."
Just as they did in their previous exhibition, the Warriors came out hot offensively, attacking the ball and setting up opportunities. Just 61 seconds into the game,Victor Regalado banged a shot off the right post, barely missing a go-ahead goal. Regalado would get a second chance, though, six minutes later when he received a crossing pass from Keeyan Ghazanfarpour, which he headed in to the right side past a diving Eric Shannon of Cal State Bakersfield for the 1-0 advantage.
With a 1-0 lead, Cal State Stanislaus staved off an onslaught of shots from the Roadrunners. Cal State Bakersfield outshot the Warriors 14-4 in the first half alone and 26-8 in the match. Only seven of Cal State Bakersfield’s 26 shots were on goal. The Warriors had five shots on goal. Matt Shaxton and Frank Barnes led the Roadrunners with six shots and two shots on goal each.
"It was obvious we didn’t have the ball as much as we would like or need to, but I was proud of the way the guys held their composure," Taylor said.
Javier Rosales and Steven Waite split time in goal for the Warriors and played solidly. Rosales made two saves in the first half and Waite made four in the second half.
The Warriors open the regular season at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Warrior Stadium against NAIA member Fresno Pacific.
