Turlock Councilman Kurt Spycher has requested that a discussion regarding painting “In God We Trust” on the wall behind the Council dais be added to the next Turlock Council Meeting Agenda.

The idea came from a conversation with former Mayor Curt Andre who said that when the “new” City Hall was being designed (late 1990’s) it was the Council’s intent to have “In God We Trust” on the wall in the Council chamber.

Councilman Spycher said that he has funding taken care without using City money.

This follows after the Turlock City Council received a letter from the Freedom From Religion Foundation requesting that the Turlock Council stop scheduling invocations during the Council Meetings and that if they are given, must be nonsectarian.

Since receiving the letter, prayer has preceded the official start of the Turlock City Council Meetings until City Attorney Phaedra Norton can research the issue thoroughly and propose a prayer policy for Council Meetings.
