The community bike park group has now hit their $10,000 fundraising goal set by City Council to begin the construction of Turlock BMX Bike Park located at the Walnut + Christoffersen storm basin.
City employee Carla McLaughlin reported late today that the City of Turlock has received $9,470 in contributions toward the BMX Bike Park. Robert Fernandes of Jim Fernandes Construction is also paying for $1,000 of fencing materials, bringing the fundraised total to $10,470.
The 14 year old kid that started the project by sending a letter to the editor of TurlockCityNews.com, Dominic Rufo, asked for help and now that he’s about 17 years old he’s saying “It’s about time!”
The Turlock City Council voted to approve the BMX Bike Park on February 24, 2009 with the contingency that construction would not begin until the community raised $10,000 of the estimated $25,000 cost of the park.
Two service clubs were early supporters of the bike park project from about a year and half ago. The Turlock Lions Club gave $2,500 and the Kiwanis Club of Turlock gave $1,000.
“We’re very proud and very honored to give money to the Turlock community. We’re very happy to help out the kids by supporting public activities for them,” said Turlock Lions Club President Mike Baptista. “We’re glad that it went through and that we could help.”
“The Kiwanis Club of Turlock was excited to hear about the Bike Park project and supported it from the start because Turlock youth need more things to do here,” said Kiwanis Club of Turlock President Trina Walley. “We’re looking forward to seeing the completed project.”
The construction of the bike park has always been planned around volunteer work days, including the forming of the dirt jumps and obstacles by the bicycle riders themselves.
City Parks and Recreation Manager Rick Harden said that materials are being ordered and volunteer days will be organized soon.
Kim Rufo, mother of Dominic Rufo and major project supporter/fundraiser, said “We would like to join the others with the construction of the park. Thank you to all who financially supported this project.”
Kim Rufo explained that Dominic would like to enjoy it for a few short months before he signs up for the Marines and is gone.
“Maybe someday, if he comes back, he can bring his kids here to enjoy it,” said Kim Rufo.
“I’m excited to complete this project so there’s one more amenity here in Turlock for the youth (and all active people),” said David (DJ) Fransen who has been a leader of the project.
Fransen said that he is grateful for the community’s participation, unanimous vote of approval by City Council, the early support by the Turlock Lions Club and the Kiwanis Club of Turlock, and all the generous donations.
