The Turlock Unified School District proudly announced that three of their students participated in the 53rd Annual California Band Directors Association High School All-State Band.
These students were among the 300 talented high school musicians from all over California chosen from a pool of nearly 2000 competitors. All students were required to record a CD of themselves playing several required scales and a solo excerpt. They submitted it by the deadline of December 1st and experts from California Band Director’s Association (CBDA) listened to all the trumpet CDs, for example, and chose 30 to go to state.
Those 30 show up at Fresno and play a live audition for another adjudicator to be placed in one of 3 bands that practice all weekend and do a joint concert.
The student musicians spent the weekend of February 18-21 at the Fresno Convention Center rehearsing challenging and exciting music, culminating in the outstanding Sunday afternoon performance.
“The process is grueling and very satisfying for those who finally get there,” said Olga Weddle, Director of Bands for the Turlock Unified School District. “They get to play with a hundred of the best musicians in the state, all first-chair players in their own right. The music they produce is awesome.”
All three Turlock students play in their school band programs, all three played in NorCal Honor Band and All-County Honor Band.
The Turlock District Band Festival is coming up on March 25, and all schools in Turlock will be participating. 7:00 PM, Pitman High Gym. Admission is free. This concert features junior high and high school players.
