Turlock Downtown Property Owners Association and American Legion Rex Ish Post 88 are proud to present the Turlock Independence Celebration in Downtown Turlock on July 3, 2010.
There will be no public fireworks show this year in Turlock, neither at CSU Stanislaus or the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds.
Turlock Downtown and the American Legion Rex Ish Post 88 have worked to include as many participants as possible to help make this year’s 4th Annual Independence Celebration a fun community event where everyone is there!
The event will include an open Independence Celebration Car Show, Patriotic Parade, and an old fashion street faire atmosphere that is sure to fill the streets with thousands of people as it has the last three years.
Sponsors include Les Schwab Tires, American Legion Rex Ish Post 88, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Ladies Auxiliary VFW, Allen Mortuary, Turlock Irrigation District (TID), TurlockCityNews.com, Graffiti Classics, Turlock Journal, Turlock Youth Soccer Association (TYSA), Turlock Downtown Property Owners Association, Farmers & Merchants Bank, Rex Klein Insurance, Bonander Pontiac, Mocse Credit Union, Woods Furniture Gallery, Monte Vista Small Animal Hospital, and Turlock Exchange Club.
On Saturday, July 3, 2010, an opening ceremony will take place at 9:30 where military service people and dignitaries including Mayor John Lazar will speak and show tribute to America’s Independence Celebration. The Patriotic Parade will begin at 10am, and the Independence Celebration Car Show will be ongoing from 10am to 4pm.
The Patriotic Parade will include around 85 entries and run through Historic Downtown on Saturday morning, expecting to draw thousands to the Main Street corridor. The Patriotic Parade will begin at E. Main Street and Palm Street, continue to W. Main Street and Broadway Avenue, and then turn off to end at Broadway Park.
This year’s Patriotic Parade Grand Marshal will be Bob Russell, commander of the American Legion Rex Ish Post 88. Russell was nominated by fellow Rex Ish Post 88 member Wardee Bruce and was chosen by community votes. Russell was nominated by several people last year also.
Wardee Bruce nominated Bob Russell for his service at the Post, in the community, and for helping out those in need, especially veterans and their families
In Bruce’s nomination he says “Although I can’t vote but once, I’m sure Turlock community would not only be honoring a super individual of the city, but would also be honoring a Veteran as Grand Marshal on the 4th of July."
Bob Russell works a lot of the American Legion Rex Ish Post 88’s functions including bartending at the Post, fundraiser dinners, and the most popular Stanislaus County Fair American Legion beer booth.
The Turlock American Legion Rex Ish Post 88 donated the American flags people will see lining Turlock Downtown on July 3rd and at future events downtown. Some of the flags were seen at Taste of Turlock 2010 which the American Legion contributed to also.
Turlock Patriotic Parade Grand Marshal Bob Russell will lead the parade in a WWII jeep down Main Street beginning at 10am.
The American Legion commander of 3 years said about his nomination and Grand Marshal position in the Patriotic Parade, “I feel honored, I’m excited.”
But as Bob Russell is a veteran of serving his country with military duty, Russell wanted to say what his country’s Independence Celebration reminds him of.
“It’s not about barbecues and having a day off,” said Russell. “It’s a day to thank a veteran for their service to this country.”
CW31 Good Day Sacramento’s Alan Sanchez has been announced Turlock Patriotic Parade’s "Celebrity Marshal" and will follow behind Grand Marshal Bob Russel.
The Independence Celebration Car Show will line East and West Main Street as it did last year with around 100 registered cars. Many different vehicles will be on display once the parade is over until 4pm.
A street faire will also be ongoing throughout the day that will include food, alcohol, and street vendors along with activities for all ages and a children’s area.
The Main Stage hosting the opening ceremony will also host the Hot Rods band from 11:30am – 3:00pm on the 400 block of E. Main Street.
The Community Stage will include performances by Van Diemen’s Band (11-12:30), The Great West End (1-2pm), and Adam Bishop (2:30-3:30) at First Street + Main Street.
The children’s bounce house, water play area will be located at Broadway Avenue + W. Main Street. Turlock Youth Soccer Association (TYSA) will also have their soccer goal kicking area set up there.
A dunk tank will be set up for whomever you wish to nominate to sit up in the seat! If you want to schedule a time slot or nominate someone to take a seat in the tank, contact us. Again, if you got a $5 minimum, you can put anyone on the seat at while you’re at the event.

About 30 street vendors will be set up between all the cars lining Main Street. Types of vendors include crafts, retail, business, non-profits, and food .
