TID General Manager Larry Weis attended his last Board Meeting on Tuesday, August 17, 2010 before he leaves for his new job as Austin Energy’s General Manager.
It was announced on July 13, 2010 that Larry Weis accepted a job as Austin Energy’s GM in Texas after leading TID for the last 10 years.
The TID Board commended Larry Weis with a framed resolution showing their appreciation for his leadership and service.
“With all stories there’s always an ending, and today’s the last chapter for Larry Weis and TID,” said TID President Rob Santos. “Today we’re going to commend Larry with a resolution.”
While successfully serving as TID’s General Manager for just over 10 years, Weis concurrently “established himself both as a progressive leader and a true gentleman in the local, regional, and state water and energy communities,” read the TID resolution.
Larry Weis was instrumental in seeing the benefit of acquiring the Westside service area, the construction of a state of the art 250 megawatt Walnut Energy Center power plant; renewable projects such as the 136 megawatt Tuolumne Wind Project, and completion of the largest fuel cell project in the State of California.
“It’s been an honor to serve this community, the customers, public power and water, and work with such great Board Members,” said Weis.
Weis has worked for two public utility companies totaling about 20 years that have included just over 900 Board meetings. Now Weis goes to work for a city owned utility which has a different reporting relationship.
Weis expressed that he has had the opportunity to work with great Board Members, employees and TID tradition.
“It’s with a heavy heart I leave, but I think I leave the utility, its employees, leadership, Board, and everybody with the utilities in great shape,” said Weis. “Whoever runs it after me, hold on to the wheel; don’t put it in a ditch or I’ll be back.”
Though Larry Weis has been credited with playing an instrumental lead role in the TID organization’s last decade of progress, in his final closing remarks he said “I’m really proud of what we’ve all done together, it hasn’t just been me.”
Weis’ last day at TID is August 31st but newly appointed Interim General Manager Casey Hashimoto will begin to take lead of the organization while the Board completes a national search for a permanent replacement for outgoing General Manager Larry Weis.
Hashimoto, a 25-year veteran of the District, became the Assistant General Manager of Electrical Engineering and Operations in early 2001.
A subcommittee compromised of Senior Board Member Charles Fernandes and Board Member Ron Macedo will work with a recruiting firm and through the process of searching for candidates until the time comes to make a recommendation of potential final candidates for the entire TID Board to consider voting on hiring.
