The Turlock Historical Society will host a replay of the "Big Game" of 1949 between the Turlock Bulldogs and the Modesto Panthers on Tuesday, September 21st at 7:00 P.M. at Berg Hall, Covenant Village, 2125 N. Olive Avenue, Turlock.
As the temperatures begin to cool and people anticipate the start of this year’s football season, we have a chance to see the old rivalry, begun in 1920, between the Modesto and Turlock schools. The game was always played on Thanksgiving Day and Turlock mothers had to schedule the turkey dinner for before or after the game.
Commentary on the game has been added to the silent, color film and a DVD of the game will be available for purchase from the Society. If you, or your relatives attended Turlock or Modesto schools in the late 40’s, you may spot someone you know in the film. The half time show is included in the movie and football fans can compare the old plays, rules and equipment to today’s game of football.
Society events are free to the public and light refreshments will be served. There will be group discussion about the rivalry between the two schools as well as a chance to meet some of the players.
Wear your school colors and join us for the game! The Turlock Historical Society and Covenant Village of Turlock would like to invite both current and former football players off all decades to view the film as a community celebrating the preservation of this film showing our city’s rich football tradition.
