After a fire at the “Last Hope Cat Kingdom” killed 69 cats and left the non-profit animal rescue with an estimated $25,000 in structural damage, Friends of Turlock Animal Shelter non-profit and newly opened Turlock business Family Pet Mortuary responded to a call for help.
Last Hope Cat Kingdom is a non-profit operated by volunteers to provide rescue and shelter, low-cost spay and neuter services, and pet adoptions for all kinds of domesticated animals. The non-profit is a no-kill animal rescue organization and animal sanctuary located on Bailey Road near Applegate just outside of Atwater.
Family Pet Mortuary’s John Pinkerton, who also is President of the non-profit Friends of Turlock Animal Shelter, said that on Friday morning a suspected electrical fire started in an office at Last Hope Cat Kingdom where the smoke went throughout the building killing 69 cats and caused a lot of damage creating a need for help.
After seeing a post on TurlockCityNews.com’s facebook, John Pinkerton and his wife Lee Anne Pinkerton, who both run Friends of Turlock Animal Shelter, started the new year off by fully loading up their hatch back car with supplies and took it all to their southern non-profit neighbor.
“I know it’s not much but at least it will get them started in the right direction,” said Pinkerton.
The 69 cats, out of the approximate 150 cats the volunteer group hosts, in the part of the building using the same ventilation system as the office didn’t make it out of their little cat doors for one reason or another. The cats that survived were on a different ventilation system.
Renate Schmitz founded Last Hope Cat Kingdom to fulfill her daughter’s hope after she was murdered in June of 2008, and who bought the property just for the animals she tried to save.
Schmitz and volunteers have reached out for the public’s help as they work to fix the damaged structure providing shelter for animals.
Requests for pet food, pet supplies, blankets, and volunteers to help construct new shelter have been made.
People looking to adopt could also help out a lot at this time by doing so. Foster homes for the animals would also help at this point after the fire.
Donations can be dropped off at the Last Hope Cat Kingdom at 6660 Bailey Road, Atwater. People may also donate via PayPal through their website at www.lasthopesanctuary.org.
