On Tuesday, March 27th, Stanislaus County Superintendent of Schools Tom Changnon visited the Turlock City Council meeting to give a presentation on Choose Civility, an initiative of the Stanislaus County Office of Education.
Dr. P.M. Forni’s inspired the initiative with his book entitled “Choosing Civility: The 25 Rules of Considerate Conduct.” Through a broad-based, collaborative effort, the Stanislaus County Office of Education plans to transform Dr. Forni’s concepts into a concrete map that can be easily integrated into the culture of government, businesses, organizations, schools, neighborhoods, and families throughout the community.
Many school districts in the county have resolved to participate in the initiative, such as Waterford Unified School District, Ceres Unified School District, Hughson Unified School District, Modesto City Schools District, Newman-Crows Landing Unified School District, Oakdale Joint Union School District, Patterson Joint Unified School District, Riverbank Unified School District, Turlock Unified School District, and others.
According to the initiative, the quality of life depends in great part on how community members treat each other. The initiative works to promote the importance of civility in a world becoming less civil, and encourages community members to choose positive and respectful behaviors in their personal and work lives.
The top twelve principles of Choose Civility include: Listening, Respect Other People’s Time, Don’t Shift Responsibility & Blame, Accept & Give Others Praise, Respect Others’ Opinions, Acknowledge Others, Speak Kindly, Apologize Sincerely, Refrain from Idle Complaints, Think the Best, Accept & Give Constructive Criticism, and Don’t Speak Ill.
The City of Modesto and the City of Turlock have committed to displaying “Choose Civility” banners in their downtown areas to remind citizens and community members the importance of displaying civil behavior within a community.
