The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department received a call of a man that was suicidal. Initial reports stated that he was armed with a gun and attempted to harm himself. Several deputies were responding to the scene, two deputies got on scene and the male subject fired a round at deputies, who returned fire. He went back into the house and the deputies retreated for cover.
According to Stanislaus County Sheriff’s spokesman Royjindar Singh, a call for deputy assistance went out after the exchange of gunfire. Officers from throughout the county responded to the scene. The house has now been surrounded and everyone had been accounted for but law enforcement had not made contact with the suspect.
As of the initial shots fired, there were no injuries reported as of around 3:30pm.
It is unknown what the suspect’s motives were for having suicidal thoughts or for shooting at the deputies.
The suspect’s family members who were inside the house before the standoff occurred are being interviewed. Family members had already reported that the suspect had multiple weapons.
Singh stated that because of the potential threat to Stanislaus County Sheriff deputies, multiple agencies have responded including SWAT, CHP, and Turlock Police. The Sheriff’s helicopter is also flying overhead.
“We’re taking all steps necessary to protect ourselves and make sure the situation comes to an end safely,” stated Singh.
