The Amgen Tour of California, one of the nation’s largest cycling events, could possibly be riding through the City of Turlock in 2013.
According to City Manager Roy Wasden, Amgen had sent a request to the City of Turlock to apply to be a host city for the 2013 Amgen Tour of California.
“When the Amgen race application came, it was a big deal,” stated Sharon Silva, CEO and President of the Turlock Chamber of Commerce. “We started meeting immediately, as the application has to be done in two and half weeks, and there’s over 100 cities applying.” Silva also shared that the City of Modesto, who has been involved with the race in previous years, and the City of Sonora were also applying.
“This is the first time that the City of Turlock has been invited to do this.”
“I’m so excited about this opportunity, because the community is excited,” shared Silva. She also reported that the Chamber of Commerce and CVB has also received $50,000 in donations already in support of the race, even though the news of the race had yet to be announced.
“Nobody can say anything but what a wonderful opportunity this would be for our City,” she stated.
Councilwoman Mary Jackson was impressed with the amount of donations the Chamber and CVB had already collected.
“You already have half of the funds, and fundraising hasn’t even started yet,” stated Jackson. “That’s a big deal.”
While being part of the Amgen Tour of California does require a $75,000 to $100,000 commitment from a participating host city, the funds would only come directly from community donations and fundraising events by the Chamber of Commerce and CVB.
Should Turlock be selected as a host city for the race, the City would have to provide resources such as public safety personnel, as well as street closures.
Silva stated that the Chamber and CVB will be applying for both a finish and/or start spot for the race, however, the final decision would be in the hands of the Amgen Tour as to whether or not Turlock would be a ‘pass-through’ City, or a ‘Start/Finish’ location.
Amgen organizers will announce the top 14 cities chosen from about 100 applying to host a stage of the tour in September while the finalized route will be announced in November of this year.
The Council shared similar thoughts that the Amgen Tour would be beneficial for the City of Turlock, as it would provide not only economic boosts for local businesses, but is also a chance to showcase Turlock’s community.
The Council voted unanimously to allow the Chamber of Commerce and CVB to accept the invitation from Amgen to submit the application to the Amgen Tour of California, with hopes of Turlock being chosen as a host city for the race.
