The Turlock Action for Business Political Action Committee (TABPAC) has endorsed two candidates for Turlock City Council: Mary Jackson and Steven Nascimento.
“We believe Jackson’s continued council participation coupled with Nascimento’s energy and enthusiasm will benefit our city,” stated Paul Porter, chair of the TABPAC board. “Our vote to support was unanimous.”
“I am truly humbled by the TABPAC endorsement for my re-election campaign to the Turlock City Council,” stated Incumbent Mary Jackson. “I thank the members and the Turlock Chamber for their support. I look forward to continue working with the Chamber to improve and enhance all aspects of our community.”
Recently, TABPAC sponsored a community forum at Covenant Village for Council Candidates Steven Nascimento, Sergio Alvarado, Amy Bublak, and Mary Jackson before conducting a second interview with the TABPAC board. The TABPAC Board is made up half of Turlock Chamber of Commerce members, with the other half made up of individuals that are involved with business and/or politics.
“We worked to give each candidate the same questions. We didn’t want to give anyone an unfair advantage and made it a point in the forum and in the interview process to be consistent,” stated Porter. “The interview also allowed us to have a more in-depth exchange with the candidates. This interview process gave the TABPAC interview team an opportunity to get to know each candidate and their platform, and their reason for wanting to serve the Turlock Community on the City Council.”
For the interview process, the candidates had a two-minute opening statement to introduce their qualifications and platform, and there were specific questions to each candidate. In closing, the candidates had two minutes for closing remarks.
“They asked a lot of tough questions,” stated Candidate Steven Nascimento. “I’m a pretty straight forward guy, and I think they appreciated that.”
“It is of most importance to the Business Community to know that the elected officials understand the needs of the business community as well as the impact their decision has on the community as a whole. At the end of the process, the decision was made to endorse Incumbent Mary Jackson and Steve Nascimento,” stated Porter. “Each of these candidates has an understanding of the Business Community, as well as an understanding of the needs of the Community of Turlock. We believe Turlock’s future is best served with these two individuals being elected for City Council.”
In 2008, TABPAC endorsed Councilwoman Amy Bublak, however, she did not receive their endorsement for the 2012 election. Bublak did not provide any statements to TurlockCityNews.com regarding TABPAC’s decision to change support.
“Each member that was on the interview committee had an independent vote,” stated Porter. “And the joint was a unanimous decision for Steven and Mary.”
"I’m honored to have the support of our business community. The overall support from the community has been very humbling,” stated Nascimento. "Local businesses are critical to the success of our local economy, and I think it’s important that every candidate be vetted by those who have a vested interest in the success of our community."
While the endorsement from the TABPAC Board does not currently include financial contributions, but rather just support for the two candidates, TABPAC Chair Paul Porter stated that it might eventually lead to financial contributions later.
