Earlier this year, the City of Turlock was invited to apply for a spot on the Amgen Tour of California, one of the nation’s largest cycling events.
City Manager Roy Wasden reported that Amgen had contacted the City of Turlock, requesting the City to apply to be a host city for the 2013 Amgen Tour of California.
While many were excited about the possibility of the Amgen Tour of California coming to Turlock, it was well known that the tour is very selective in regards to the cities that are chosen as part of the route. After months of waiting, Amgen contacted the City of Turlock stating that Turlock would not be included in the 2013 Amgen Tour of California.
“We were not told anything other than they were very pleased with our application, but the Amgen was not coming to the Valley this year,” stated Turlock Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Sharon Silva, who fronted the application process. “Of course we were disappointed, but it was a very positive experience working with everyone to put the plan together.”
Back in August when the City of Turlock was asked to apply, Silva said, “When the Amgen race application came, it was a big deal.”
Silva stated that the application had to be done in two and half weeks, and that there were over 100 cities applying, including previous Amgen hosts such as Modesto and Sonora. Silva went on to say that it was the first time Turlock had been invited to apply and that the Chamber of Commerce and CVB received $50,000 in donations, even before the news of the race had yet to be announced.
While the Amgen Tour of California will not be passing through the Central Valley in the 2013 tour, Silva is hopeful for another chance to be selected in the future.
“Hopefully next year!”
