On Tuesday evening, December 11, 2012, newly elected Steven Nascimento and reelected Councilwoman Amy Bublak were sworn in by the City of Turlock and took their seat as Council Members on the Turlock City Council.
Bublak and Nascimento were elected on November 6, 2012. Nascimento, who took Mary Jackson’s seat on the council, previously served on the City of Turlock Parks, Recreation, and Community Commission. Bublak was first elected to the Turlock City Council in 2008.
Many city officials, city staff, and friends and family of Nascimento attended the swearing in ceremony, which was held directly after a reception at City Hall in honor of Nascimento and Bublak.
City of Turlock Clerk Kellie Weaver presided over the swearing in process for both Nascimento and Bublak, which was followed by the entire council taking an oath to serve the City of Turlock well. Judge Shawn D. Bessey of the Stanislaus County Superior Court conducted the oath, which has been a Turlock tradition by the Turlock City Council since it was implemented at the request of Amy Bublak when she first took office in 2008.
“I wish you the greatest success in the coming years,” stated Judge Bessey to the council members. “I know that you will serve the community of Turlock well.”
Also sworn into office was City Treasurer Diana Lewis, who ran uncontested in the General Municipal Election.
Although the reception held prior to the swearing in ceremony was also in honor of outgoing Councilwoman Mary Jackson and her time spent serving the City Council since 2008, Jackson was unable to attend the reception or the council meeting due to one of her children being sick at home. Mayor John Lazar did state at the meeting that he was grateful for Jackson’s service to the City of Turlock and that an official proclamation recognizing her time on the Council would be issued.
Sergio Alvarado, who also ran in the election this year, attended the meeting and offered his congratulations to both Bublak and Nascimento during the public comment period of the City Council meeting.
“I want to thank everyone who showed up to support me, including my wife and my newborn son Levi,” stated Nascimento at the end of the meeting. “I look forward to working with the Council and city staff to move the city forward.”
Bublak also thanked her supporters and her husband, Dr. Milton Richards, who was also present at the meeting.
Due to the Christmas holiday, the Turlock City Council will hold their next regularly scheduled meeting on January 8th, 2013.
