FLORENCE KEESEY KINZIE
January 29, 1926 – February 17, 2013
Florence was born in San Francisco, California to Karl and Josephine Sandstrom. They moved to Turlock when she was three. Until last year she lived on the original home property, first as a daughter, then as a wife and mother. She attended Cal Berkeley and returned to teach at Turlock High School where she met Vincent Keesey. They married in 1951 and had four children: Sandy, John, Diane and Cathy. After 18 years of marriage Vincent passed away in 1969. Florence began teaching again at Denair Elementary School and was very active in her children’s numerous activities – church, 4-H, music interests, clubs and school. In 1977 she married Ray Kinzie, who brought his two children into the family, Bill and Joanne. Florence and Ray enjoyed running an antique business that eventually evolved into a silver plate matching service. There were years of picking and juicing pomegranates, making applesauce and dried apples, and harvesting walnuts. Each Christmas found Florence hosting a Christmas Eve smorgasbord dinner for her extended family. She spent her days reaching out in service to family and friends. She was always baking and cooking something for others. Over the years Florence was active in community organizations: Turlock Reading Club, P.E.O, and SkandiFest, to name a few. She served as a deacon at the First Presbyterian Church, and as a board member at Emanuel Hospital and Keyes Elementary School.
Florence went home to be with the Lord February 17, after an extended illness. She was preceded in death by her brother Helmer, her parents, and her first husband Vincent Keesey. She is survived by Ray Kinzie, her husband of 35 years, children Sandy Dirkes (Randy), John Keesey (Valerie), Diane Borton (James), Cathy Black, Bill Kinzie (Pat), Joanne Chappell (Jeff), 19 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Florence will be greatly missed by many people who have experienced her love and compassion for decades.
There will be a memorial service at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at First Presbyterian Church, 2619 N. Berkeley Ave. Turlock. Burial will be private at Turlock Memorial Park.
