The American Legion made a generous donation to one Wakefield Elementary School classroom on Wednesday.

The school's resource classroom was presented with a check at around 10 a.m. Wednesday. The American Legion asked that the amount not be published.

“We're just giving a little money to them,” said John Haggstrom, of the American Legion Rexish Post 88 in Turlock.

As part of its mission, the American Legion supports local schools, sponsors baseball teams, and attempts to help out the community wherever it can. The patriotic veterans organization has existed since 1919.

The Wakefield Elementary School resource classroom was selected in particular because of recent cutbacks endured, Haggstrom said.

“We feel like this class needs a little help,” Haggstrom said.

The check was accepted by resource teacher Phil Dwight.
