Interested in giving back to the community through volunteer policing? The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department is seeking new members for its STARS program.
STARS are uniformed volunteers who assist the Sheriff’s Department in a variety of ways. They may work as court security, assist in the records division, serve subpoenas, help with neighborhood watch programs or work special events such as the Stanislaus County Fair.
STARS members take care of duties that otherwise would be assigned to a sheriff's deputy, giving deputies more time to patrol the streets.
To be in STARS, applicants must be at least 22 years old, able to commit up to 10 hours of volunteer time each month, pass a limited background investigation and have a desire to make this a better community in which to live.
Volunteers receive approximately 40 hours of STARS academy training with an emphasis on being the “eyes and ears” of the Sheriff's Department. Through the training, STARS volunteers will become goodwill ambassadors for the department.
To apply, visit www.scsdonline.com/forms/stars.html. The application and selection process will include an interview and background check.
