For the third year in a row, Medeiros Elementary School student Mya Sanchez, 8, will be on the field during halftime at an NFL football game.

This year Mya (first place) will be joined by fellow students Hailey Bacon (second place) and her brother Avery Bacon (second place), both in the 6-7 year old division. Mya won the San Francisco 49ers competition last year, and the Oakland Raiders competition the year before.

Last weekend the three students competed in the Sacramento sectional of the NFL Punt Pass and Kick competition, which included students from Turlock all the way to Yreka. The winners of the Sacramento section will compete against sectional winners from Utah, Nevada and the Bay Area.

The three Turlock students will be on the field during halftime of the Dec. 8 San Francisco 49ers game against the Seattle Seahawks.

PPK participants are split up into age groups and then allowed one punt, one pass and one placekick. The total distance of the combined three attempts is measured for a total score.

Each attempt is measured by distance and accuracy along a straight line. Any deviation from the line is subtracted from the straight distance, and measurements are made from where the ball first hits the ground. For example, if a participant throws the ball 100 feet down the line, and 30 feet to the right, the total score is 70 feet.
