There may not be a Presidential election stirring up national debate, but a number of hot-button local races are on the ballot for Tuesday's Consolidated District Election.
Turlock voters, depending on their place of residence, will decide on new members for the Turlock Irrigation District Board of Directors, the Turlock Unified School District Board of Trustees, and the Stanislaus County Board of Education.
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday. TurlockCityNews.com will report results as they come in after the polls close.
The most controversial races are for the two TID seats, as incumbents face off with labor-minded candidates in each campaign. The races have generated an enormous volume of public comment, and audience outbursts at TurlockCityNews.com's candidate forum.
The Division 5 race will see incumbent TID Director Ron Macedo face off against challenger Darrel Monroe, a retired TID ditch tender. The Division 3 race sees incumbent TID Director Joe Alamo square off with Daniel Agundez, a retired Pacific Gas & Electric electrical supervisor.
The TUSD election will be the district's first to elect trustees by district, rather than at-large.
Incumbent Area 2 Trustee Tami Harrill-Muniz go up against Deborah Martin, a retired utility director. And the Area 6 contest will be without an incumbent, as Josh Bernard will step down from the board. The seat will be filled by either Jennifer Carter, a human resources director, or Joe Lewis, the President of Turlock Youth Football.
The Stanislaus County Board of Education Area 2 race will see Alice Pollard, a retired school administrator who formerly served as principal of Turlock Adult School, take on Christopher Barth, a businessman and farmer who previously ran Turlock's GolfUSA and failed in campaigns to join the TID Board of Directors in 1999 and 2011.
Though election day isn't until Tuesday, a few campaigns have already been decided. TUSD Trustee Bob Weaver, an incumbent from area 4, will win re-election unopposed, as will TID Director Charles Fernandes, the Division 2 incumbent.
