A Turlock Irrigation District power outage occurred at 6:46 a.m. this morning in north Turlock, due to a blown transformer and burned underground lines. For some customers, power remains out.

TID reports that the main streets affected are Crowell Road, West Minnesota Avenue, Oxford Avenue, Northwestern Court, Georgetown Avenue, Gettysburg Street, Cole Avenue, Samantha Way, and Dels Lane. The power is expected to return late tonight, at 12 midnight.
TID asks customers to call its 24-hour service line at 209-883-8301 if they are without power for longer than five minutes.

TID also recommends that customers locate their electrical service panel to check if the main circuit breaker has flipped to the “off” or “trip” position before calling the service line.

Turlock resident Stan Van Winkle reported he was awakened at 7 a.m. this morning by “what sounded like a transformer exploding.”

TID Line Supervisor Troy Borges reported that one crew comprised of a foreman, four linemen and a troubleshooter have been on site working to fix the outage.

Van Winkle who lives around the corner from the scene noticed the crews working today and explained that for him, the outage was not a burden.

“TID crews have been working all day to restore power in the area of Northwestern (Court) and are still on site,” said Van Winkle. “It only affected us for a second.”

TCN observed that Northwestern Court remained without power as of 9:10 p.m., but that most of the surrounding neighborhoods appeared to be lit.

"When the wire went bad, it caused the transformer to go bad,” said Borges "The wire is in conduit, we have to pull out all the old wire and then pull in new wire. It's a big job."

Borges also confirmed TID’s report that power should be back by 12 midnight.

Please disclose the amount of overtime paid or if this was a contracted crew. Would a contracted crew even be available?

The contractor workers base pay is $55.00 per hr. Monday through Friday from 7:00am to 3:30pm for 8hrs of work. BUT here’s the kicker! The contractors work 10hrs a day, 7 days a week. So anything outside of Monday through Friday 7:00am to 3:30pm is at a double rate! Plus benefits! And each man is marked up about 20%+, because the contracting company has to make money too! TID is paying this plus the contractors overhead at a premium, I.E. truck rentals, rent at the property where the contractors store their equipment, TID also pays for security guards to watch the contractors equipment over night. Etc. Etc. BTW The contractors are not set up to do the kind of work mentioned in the story, and are generally not available!

Chris- I don’t think that J.T.B was complaining. It appears that person was just sharing some info that impacts us rate payers. If you did the math of what this person shared, it shows that TID is paying each contractor worker $285,000+, peanuts to what TID pays its own people.

Hey Chris, are you jealous much??? Maybe if you put more energy into getting a job instead of complaining about other people’s hardwork and success, you might make over 100,000 too. Don’t be a hater! Just for the record I am not a lineman and don’t make over 100,000 and I’m not jealous of people who do 😀
