Ever wonder if any registered sex offenders live near your home, office, or childrens' school?
The Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department has launched a new sex offender registration and public notification website known as “Offender Watch.”
Sheriff Adam Christianson says the site is citizen-friendly and allows visitors to search for sex offenders and predators who may be in close proximity to their homes, work, schools or churches.
“People have a right to know which offenders may be living near them, who potentially pose a threat to their families. We’re happy to be able to provide that information, ”Christianson said.
The information is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The website is updated in real-time by the department as offender information changes and is reported.
As part of this new, innovative service, people may enter any address of interest to see a map and a listing of all offenders within a user defined radius.
Residents may also confidentially register their address and be updated if a sex offender registers an address within the user’s specified radius.
Offender Watch also enables the Sheriff’s Department to verify that offender addresses do not violate any safety buffers that may be implemented around protected institutions such as schools, daycare facilities and parks. It also helps law enforcement schedule compliance checks, verifying information provided by offenders.
More than 5,000 law enforcement agencies nationwide use Offender Watch, including 45 in California.
