The Turlock Youth Wrestling Club participated in the California USA Wrestling State Championships two weeks ago at Selland Arena in Fresno where 12 out of 18 Turlock wrestlers placed, including Hailey Ward who was crowned Girl’s State Champion in the 75lb Novice Girls division.
Ward has wrestled with TYWC for three years and this is her second state title. This tough girl juggles wrestling and soccer.
“She is very smart and good with her technique,” said TYWC Coach Lucas Solarez. “We’ll show her a move once or twice and she picks it up quick. She also has been wrestling boys all year long and she was beating some of them. She has no problem beating other girls.”
Ward wasn’t the only wrestler to have success. All these youth are learning about perseverance, courage and strength.
“All the Turlock wrestlers did great. The coaches, parents and friends are all very proud of them. If people could see the hard work they put in, the blood, the sweat and a lot of tears they would be amazed at what these young kids can do. Out on the mat it’s the other guys who are huffing and puffing and crying,” said Solarez.
The wrestlers have competed since November with four to five practices a week and tournaments on the weekends.
Other impressive wrestlers at the state tournament included twin brothers Jeremiah and Isaiah Bertalotto in the Bantam division. Jeremiah and Isaiah were slated to match up against each other in the third place state match. Officials decided the boys shouldn’t wrestle, but both were already on the mat ready for battle. The referee had the boys shakes hand and triumphantly raised both their hands as third place winners.
“It was pretty fun, they had no idea what happened but I think they were relieved when they realized they didn’t have to wrestle each other,” said Solarez.
Mason Ontiberos, a first year wrestler, came back from a 0-7 match to beat his opponent 8-7 and reached the top 8 in the 64-wrestler bracket.
“He is just a competitor that doesn’t give up and has some brute strength for a 6-year old boy,” said Solarez.
Other highlights include five-year Turlock Wrestling Club veterans William Giron and Isaiah Ontiberos, who finished in seventh and sixth places respectively.
In three weeks the club will be heading to Reno, Nevada to compete in the “Reno Worlds Wrestling Tournament,” a national competition. Then the club starts its freestyle wrestling season, which ends in June.
