Downtown Turlock will continue to be awakened with the opening of another “food-related” business, as well as the moving of Pet Extreme’s headquarters, in the vacant spot at the southeast corner of West Main Street and South Broadway Avenue facing Dust Bowl Brewing Tap Room and the soon-to-be Memo’s Cocina.
The owners of Turlock Poker Room and Casino had purchased the building with plans proposed in 2008 to open a 14,000 square-foot card room and steak house, before settling on their current popular hot spot next to the movie theatre near the Highway 99 and West Main Street exit.
Red Brick Café owners had announced in October of 2012 that they would be relocating their bar to the 146 W. Main Street location, in addition to opening a new restaurant. After a year of planning and construction work on the building, the bar owners decided to remain at their current location on Broadway Avenue.
Downtown Turlock Property Owners Association Member At Large Eric Gonsalves explained that the Swanson family purchased the building a couple months ago, and the plans will be sent to the City of Turlock next week. The Swanson family owns Pet Extreme, which will move its corporate headquarters into the building’s space upstairs hopefully by October. Its current location is on Monte Vista Avenue, in the same business complex as Monte Vista Small Animal Hospital.
So as for the “food-related” business, what will it be? Gonsalves is keeping his lips sealed for now on the name, but gave a few clues as to what the building will hold downstairs.
According to Gonsalves, the downtown building will hold the “food-related” business offering a different kind of cuisine than Dust Bowl or the yet-to-open Memo’s Cocina has to offer — ruling out American pub style food and fresh Mexican cuisine.
Gonsalves also revealed that the owners of the business are business owners in a town nearby, just not Turlock.
Look out for an update soon though, as Gonsalves said that he will announce to TurlockCityNews.com what the new business will be in a week, or two — but admitted that they are expecting to open up the food-related venture in fall of this year.
The upstairs where Pet Extreme’s corporate headquarters will move is a space of approximately 6,000 square feet, while the downstairs is a space of about 1,200 square feet. A separate entrance will be used for the head quarters upstairs, and an elevator will also be installed. Gonsalves explained that the Swanson family, who already own other buildings on Main Street, enjoy downtown and wanted to continue contributing to what is becoming a lively atmosphere for Turlockers.
