The mysterious cross that appeared Aug. 1 near the corner of Golden State Boulevard and Roberts Road was put up by members of the Assyrian Pentecostal Church of Turlock in order to raise awareness about the church’s possible new location and the importance of the Assyrian people and Christian faith during climatic world events.
According to long-time church member Isaac Yaghoubi, the cross was put up to mark the church’s possible future location; currently the church has a location at 857 West Main St. and several years ago purchased the land on Golden State Boulevard for $800,000.
He said the infrastructure for the new church is already in place, however the money to construct the new church has dried up.
Yaghoubi, who hosts a weekly Assyrian program on Local Channel 15 that airs Friday nights from 7 to 8 p.m., also noted the significance of the cross and church in relation to current world events.
“We are the same church and people that right now are being blown up over in Iraq,” said Yaghoubi. “The cross represents our freedom to worship God in this land of opportunity I have lived in for more than 25 years.”
