A woman was arrested for arson on Saturday afternoon after allegedly starting a fire at a Turlock apartment complex.

The Turlock Fire Department received report of a residential structure fire at an apartment located at 3501 Crowell R. at approximately 1:37 p.m. Saturday.

A resident of a different apartment could see and smell smoke, and reported the fire, according to the Turlock Fire Department.

Until fire crews could arrive, a resident applied a dry chemical fire extinguisher to the fire to keep it contained.

When firefighters arrived, they found light smoke filling the open door of the apartment, according to the Turlock Fire Department. The occupant had already exited the apartment on her own.

The fire, which was confined to a pile of clothes and a bookcase, was quickly extinguished.

According to the Turlock Police Department, Shannon Waldorf, 36, allegedly caused the fire at the apartment.

She also allegedly refused to allow firefighters in the home and interfered with them as they assessed the fire, according to the Turlock Police Department.

Waldorf was arrested for arson and interfering with fire personnel.

Damage was estimated at $2,000 in building damage and $500 in personal property.
