It’s that time of year to make a reservation to show you care.
On Wednesday, We Care Turlock opened its online calendar so families, organizations and individuals can reserve their spot to serve residents of the We Care Winter Shelter for men.
Founded in 2002, We Care is a non-profit organization that provides emergency cold weather shelter and housing assistance to the Turlock homeless community.
The shelter opens Nov. 8 and will remain so until April 15, 2015.
The calendar can be found at http://wecareturlock.org/get-involved/shelter-dinner-faqs/167-2/. Scroll down to fill out the date requested and further information.
We Care Manager Debbie Gutierrez says volunteers are vital to helping those in need.
“Working together, we can succeed in meeting the needs in our community, one person, one dollar, one meal, one bed and one day at a time.”
Families or groups who volunteer are expected to purchase, prepare and serve dinner to anywhere between 49 to 56 people. Volunteers must prepare meals off-site and bring them to We Care.
Groups can be anywhere from four to 10 people and hot meals are suggested. Dinner suggestions include a main dish, side, veggies, bread, dessert and drinks like milk, soda, juice, hot chocolate or water. Volunteers are free to make “breakfast bags” for the following morning to include breakfast bars, fruit and bottled water or juice.
In addition to opening the volunteer calendar, We Care will be holding a yard sale with proceeds going back to We Care to help fund the winter shelter.
The yard sale will be held this Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 219 S. Broadway in Turlock. Volunteers are needed to help set up and work the yard sale. Donations are also needed for the sale. All donations are tax deductible.
