Simply dominant is best way to describe the Turlock High School Girls Golf Team. For the 11th consecutive year the girls have earned a Central California Conference Championship, and if that isn’t impressive enough — over that stretch they have a record of 133-3.
Coach Mary Krupka took over the team 11 years ago and each year she challenges her golfers to match the previous year’s team.
But despite their excellent record, this year’s team had something to prove.
Last year, THS hosted the CIF Division 1 South Section Championship at Turlock Golf and Country Club, but came up a few strokes short of winning and earned second-place to Lodi High.
“After that match Bergen Benedict and Sarah Garcia stated that ‘we are going to win this tournament next year,’” said Krupka.
Fast forward one year and THS did just that, winning by 9 strokes over Lodi at their home course, the Woodbridge Country Club for the CIF D-1 Sac Joaquin Championship.
Krupka couldn’t be more proud of her team and each girl’s push for team success over personal success through the motto “Doing what is best for the team.”
“It was a great win because the gals were starting to think that they lost it. They battled through some bad luck, bad shots and situations that would make most people quit,” she said.
Krupka says her team fosters an environment where older players demonstrate and help teach younger players golf skills, course management and what their roles are on the team.
Expect more success in the future, as the goals will remain high for the THS Girls Golf Team year in and year out.
“Our goals are always to win league, get THS a championship to help with the CCC Athletic Excellence Award and to improve our CIF scores and tournament finishes from the previous year,” said Krupka. “We have developed a pretty good golf program here at THS.”
