Four new Turlock Police Department officers joined the force after swearing in following their graduation from the San Joaquin Delta College Peace Officer Academy Wednesday afternoon.
Officers Jose Calvache, Emanuel Moles, Adam Neep, and Alfred Velasquez were among the 45 member Class of 34-2015; the class was the first ever full-time class — attending eight hours a day Monday through Friday — at the San Joaquin Delta College Peace Officer Academy.
The Turlock Police Department, which peaked with about 86 sworn officers in 2009, has 78 allocated positions for officers currently; of those 78 positions available, 72 are filled.
At a public workshop held as part of Mayor Gary Soiseth’s 100 Day Vision earlier this month, Turlock Police Chief Rob Jackson laid out a three phase plan to meet the department’s needs and get staffing back to the numbers in 2009. Although Jackson plans to have to the department back to 2009 staffing levels in the coming years, he hopes to fill current vacancies this year.
“I’m very optimistic that by the end of this fiscal year we’ll have all of our positions filled,” said Jackson at the workshop.
The four newest members of the Turlock Police Department were introduced at a small ceremony on Thursday morning, prior to their first day on the job. The newly sworn officers will go through training with the department before going on patrol by themselves.
“It’s the start for four young officers, the first day of being a police officer in a long career,” said Jackson.
In addition to the newly sworn officers, Turlock Police Department has also been adding some non-sworn staff in the last few months.
“Exciting times for us,” said Jackson. “I was looking at the boards throughout the office featuring new employees and we have 12 new faces on them.”
Included in recent staff hires since March 2 are: Chris Jett, a part-time Animal Services Clerk; Jamie Vargas, a full-time dispatcher; Monica Maschal, a part-time police cadet; and Chandra Hopson, Andrea Virdell, Alexa Ortega, and Lauren Watts, all part-time dispatchers.
The Turlock Police Department also has one officer currently in the Fresno City College Police Academy.
