Turlock agriculture students will be able to further their interests in agriculture with California State University, Stanislaus’ summer Leadership Experiences in Agricultural Development and Sciences program. With this program, students will have a new resource on hand to explore career opportunities in agriculture.
The summer LEADS program at Stanislaus State University will be centered around the theme of “Improving Agriculture, Improving Lives!” and is designed to expose students to the diverse disciplines and career opportunities in agriculture.
Participating students will take part in activities at the university and be introduced to the emerging technologies and developments in agriculture.
According to Professor and Rolland Starn Endowed Chair of Agricultural Studies Oluwarotimi Odeh at Stanislaus State University, their participation will see them learning from field trips and activities that include includes a trip to a United States Department of Agriculture research facility in Parlier, CA where students can see “exciting ongoing water and insect acoustics research programs.”
While in the LEADS program, students will be learning from experts and through hands-on field and lab activities which include exploring geographic information technology, understanding plant growth & care, raising healthy animals, business of food, and a soil and water conservation demonstration – rainfall simulator experiment.
Even though the program highlights agriculture, students transitioning into college will reap the benefits of being exposed to college life, the admission process, financial aid, career opportunities, networking, resume building, and mock interviews with industry partners.
2 camps on 2 different weeks are being offered for the program. The first week of the summer LEADS program kicks off today for high school juniors and seniors, and the second week will begin the Monday after. This week is for junior college transfer students, but, according to Odeh, “high school seniors and juniors can also apply and be considered for the second week.”
The second week of the summer LEADS program will be located at Stanislaus State University beginning on June 13 through June 17 from 8 AM to 5 PM. Lunch is provided daily, but students will be responsible for transportation to and from campus.
