Two Drunks Arrested After Crashing into Canal

Turlock City News POST (38)

At about 11:53 pm Thursday night, the Turlock Police Department and Stanislaus State Police Department were dispatched to a reported vehicle collision with unknown injuries at the intersection of West Taylor Road and North Walnut Road, Turlock.

When officers arrived on scene, they found a gray Chrysler sedan into the canal in between the two points where North Walnut Road disconnects.

The vehicle had two occupants, its driver, Jaqueline Rivera, 21, of Turlock, and her passenger, Yvette Chavez, 28, of Turlock. Both were uninjured.

Rivera exhibited signs of intoxication, so officers asked her to participate in standardized field sobriety tests. She completed one of them, but due to her level of intoxication, was unable to do the rest.

The vehicle sustained moderate damage and was deemed inoperable as a result of the collision, requiring it to be towed away.

Riviera was traveling southbound on North Walnut Road approaching West Taylor Road, when for an unknown reason, she ran the stop sign, continued straight over West Taylor Road, and made a right turn into the canal.

Chavez was also intoxicated and was given the opportunity to be taken home by a friend, but she refused.

Both subjects were arrested and booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center, Rivera on charges of driving while intoxicated and driving with a blood alcohol content level of .08 or greater, and Chavez on charges of public intoxication.
