Chiropractic Office Planned for Former Red Steer Site, Maybe New Bistro

The former site of Turlock’s Red Steer restaurant, 203 S. Golden State Blvd., will soon be home to a new building which will house a chiropractic office.

The building is being developed by Sargon Malek, D.C., a local chiropractor who owns Malek Chiropractic.

“It’s 250 feet away from my current clinic (located at 373 S Golden State Blvd.),” Malek said. “The opportunity came up and I bought the property.”

Construction on the 2,700 square-foot building is set to start in two and a half months, Malek said.

“I’m really excited about this project,” Malek said. “It’s going to change the look of downtown.”

The building will be divided into two units. One 1,500 square-foot space will house Malek Chiropractic, which will relocate from its current home. The other, 1,200 square-foot space, will hold a currently unidentified tenant.

Though it’s unlikely that The Red Steer will ever return, the smaller space could, potentially, house a restaurant. Malek left an existing grease trap on site, making it easy for a restaurant to move in.

“A little bistro next to my office would be a great asset to downtown,” Malek said. “We'll see.”

Notable Turlock eatery The Red Steer formerly occupied the parcel at 203 S. Golden State Blvd., before it was burned down in a May 2009 arson fire. The building was subsequently demolished.

One of the restaurant’s co-owners, Tracy Smith, and his cousin, Jeremy Britt, allegedly burned the restaurant down to cash in on an insurance policy. Smith is charged with arson and Britt is charged with aggravated arson; both are still awaiting trial, currently scheduled for September.
