Man arrested after being on the run for several months Friday afternoon

On Friday, July 14th, 2023, at 4:46 pm, Turlock Police investigators near the intersection of S First St and S Berkeley Ave, Turlock, observed a man driving a vehicle violate the California Vehicle Code, so they attempted to make a traffic stop on him.

The man took off from the investigators and ended up pulling into the Mulberry Mobile Home Park, where he abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot.

Assisting officers arrived in the area within minutes, setting up a perimeter and beginning to search the area with police drones.

The man was eventually located hiding in a shed and he threatened to kill himself if officers got any closer.

Officers spoke with the man for a few minutes, eventually convincing him to surrender. He was arrested without incident.

The man was identified as Anthony Leyva, 32, of Turlock.

Leyva had been on the run from police for several months and had three felony warrants. The first was a no-bail bench warrant out of Modesto for domestic violence inflicting corporal injury and violation of post release community supervision, the second was a $10,000 bench warrant out of Modesto for accessing a computer system to devise or execute a scheme to defraud, and the third was a $90,000 local warrant of arrest for fleeing or attempting to elude a peace officer by vehicle with disregard for the safety of persons or property, driving or taking a vehicle without the consent of its owner, and buying or receiving a stolen vehicle.

A subsequent search of Leyva incident to arrest led to the discovery of methamphetamines.


Leyva was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of fleeing or attempting to elude a peace officer by vehicle with disregard for the safety of persons or property, driving or taking a vehicle without the consent of its owner, obstructing or resisting a public officer in the discharge of their duty, fleeing or attempting to elude a peace officer by vehicle, possession of methamphetamines, and violation of post release community supervision, as well as his warrants.
