West Nile Prevention Tips, Symptoms of Virus

Due to the recent detection of West Nile Virus in a few birds and mosquitoes in Stanislaus County, Turlock and East Side Mosquito Abatement Districts want citizens to make efforts to prevent the spread of WNV. Two pools of mosquitoes found with the virus were located in Turlock and Hughson and one dead bird was found in Turlock that tested positive for WNV. The East Side Mosquito Abatement District has also had one pool of mosquitoes in Valley Home and four dead birds in Modesto test positive.

Bank of America closed off its parking lot over the weekend as a tow-away zone in order to sealcoat and “stripe” the asphalt. ATMs remained open 24 hours inside, however, so Bank of America customers could continue to have full access to their banking.

The Jack In The Box on Geer Road recently put up a window advertisement that has caught the eye of Turlockers. The advertisement asks,“Hella Hungry?” showing a large meal while using what many consider local slang for "very" or "a lot of," among other similar descriptors. The word probably isn't anything the average Turlocker hasn’t heard, and some may answer the advertisement with a “yes!” Others may find the advertisement a little more offensive.

Turlockers looking to check out a movie at Regal Turlock Stadium 14 may spot something a little “kool” in the parking. The Monster Kool Bus, a large monster truck in the shape of a school bus used to raise money for fundraisers, will be in Turlock until June 30.

Summer is Officially Here

Although children have been on vacation for weeks and temperatures have already tipped over 100 degrees, today is officially the first day of summer. This year the first day of summer, also known as summer solstice, falls on June 21, but that day is not the set date every year. According to Weather.com, “Meteorologically speaking, summer has already started since atmospheric researchers consider June 1 as the first day of the summer season. But astronomically, the summer solstice… will arrive Saturday, June 21, 2014 at 6:51 a.m. EDT.”
