The 7-11 on Geer Road may need a facelift. In recent years, the area surrounding 7-11 has been remodeled with a new fast food restaurant, a rebuilt fast food restaurant, and a new grocery store. In 2011, the Shell gas station that stood on the corner of Geer Road and Minnesota Avenue was demolished to make way for the Burger King that now sits at the corner. At the same time, the McDonald’s on the corner of Geer and Tuolumne roads was demolished and rebuilt.

Local Post Office Carriers Look to Stamp Out Hunger

Saturday marks the 22nd anniversary of the National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food drive, when letter carriers across the country collect non-perishable food donations from their customers. According to Turlock Post Carriers, the donations go directly to local food pantries to provide food to Turlockers in need of help.“Letter carriers walk through the community every day, often coming face to face with a sad reality for too many, hunger,” said the Turlock Post Carriers in a release to their customers. “Last year, we collected over 74 million pounds of food Nationally, feeding an estimated 30 million people.”

Center for Human Services Finalist for $25,000 Grant, Votes Needed

The Center for Human Services is a finalist competing to win one of 40 $25,000 grants from the State Farm Neighborhood Assist grant program. CHS, a Modesto nonprofit, would use the grant money to start an Entrepreneurship Academy to help youth in the local community. Dropping out of high school, unemployment, and poverty are difficult hurdles for youth in Stanislaus County to overcome and maximize their potential. The Academy could address these difficulties by teaching life skills, relevant learning, creativity, relationship building, accountability, and much more through entrepreneurship education.

Emanuel Offers May Support Classes

n the month of May, Emanuel Medical Center will offer numerous classes and support programs for childbirth education, cancer education and basic life support classes.Jessica’s House (Grief Support for Children, Teens and Families)
When a family member dies, kids often feel alone. But grieving children, teens and their families can come together and share their experiences. The bi-monthly, hour-and-a-half sessions begin with a talking circle for the children and teens and conclude with activities offered in the art studio and playroom. There is no set number of sessions; families are welcome to participate for as long as they feel support is needed. A new group is starting especially for children and teens who have experienced the death of a parent or sibling by suicide. The program is free but pre-registration is required. Turlock has its fair share of lifted trucks driving around town, but these are taking it to a whole new level. Don’t expect to see these monsters driving down Geer Road though. They will only be driving at the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds, this Friday and Saturday. Monster trucks Bounty Hunter, Iron Outlaw, Time Flys, Monster Medic, El Perro Loco, Extinguisher, and Zombie Tracker will be taking to the Fairgrounds this weekend.

Sheriff, BHRS ask Community to Safely Dispose Prescription Meds

Prescription medication drug abuse is a problem that hits communities across the nation, especially in the Central Valley. One of the primary groups abusing these drugs are the nation’s youth. More than 2,500 youth between the ages of 12 and 17 are getting high on prescription drugs. To combat this trend, the Stanislaus County Behavioral Health and Recovery Services (BHRS) is partnering with Stanislaus County Sheriff Adam Christianson to open secured prescription drug collection boxes at five Sheriff’s Department facilities in Stanislaus County.
