Turlock High Speech and Debate Clean House at State Tourney

The students from the Turlock High School Speech and Debate team aren’t the type of kids you would want to get into a philosophical conversation with. They might school you. Many psychologist agree that public speaking is at the top of the list when it comes to people’s worst fears, right up there with death. But Turlock High School senior Jonas Trevethan will talk about pretty much anything in front of scores of people without even breaking a sweat. Last weekend he placed third in the California High School State Speech Association State Speech Tournament, held at Enochs High School, Modesto, in National Extemporaneous.

Around Turlock – May 1

California State University, Stanislaus Police Department staff can sometimes be seen rolling around futuristically on their Segways around campus. UPD patrols the campus 24 hours a day, seven days a week, utilizing foot, bicycle, and Segway. Segway users here cruised in front of main dining in the early evening, passing a UPD “duck” sign for their own event – a flash mob that occurred on Wednesday to promote emergency awareness.

CSU Stanislaus Professor Honored for Online Teaching

Marjorie Chan, a business management professor at California State University, Stanislaus, has been named as one of eight recipients of the California State University’s Quality Online Learning and Teaching (QOLT) award. Chan received the award for her upper-division Business Policy course. She is the first professor from CSU Stanislaus to receive the honor, which is in its third year.

Around Turlock – April 30

Covenant Village of Turlock is showing their support in "painting the town purple" with these purple ribbons out front. As shown in an Around Turlock earlier this week, multiple areas of the city are decorated with purple, including downtown. The ribbons help raise awareness for cancer research and support. Many colors are specific to different kinds of cancer awareness, but purple generally represents all forms of cancer.

Bravo Zulu to Turlock High’s NJROTC

Turlock High School’s Navy JROTC competed in the Manteca High School JROTC Sports and Raider Competition last Saturday. The THS JROTC team had six coed teams comprised of 39 cadets competing in softball, volleyball, tug-of-war, archery, soccer penalty kicks and a Raider Challenge.The Bulldogs proved their toughness in the Raider Challenge, finishing second out of 11 schools with JROTC programs. A Raider Challenge consists of a crossfit endurance test including push-ups, curl-ups, a 1.5 mile relay and land navigation and a body carry. The team was led by Team Captain Bryson Curtin. Other shipmates included, Richard Gastelum George Guzman, Felicity Spray, Rebecca Adams, and Celia Ruiz.
