Junior Lifeguard Training Begins Soon, Positions Still Available

Turlock teens can now sign up to join the City of Turlock junior lifeguard training program, which begins Monday. The training program is designed for those interested in learning how to respond to aquatic emergencies and those wanting to learn the foundation for further training and employment as a certified lifeguard.

UC Riverside Professor Writes Book on Mexican Immigrants in Turlock

A University of California, Riverside sociologist has written a book that examines that pattern of migration of immigrants from the Mexican town of Jalostotitlán (Jalos), Jalisco and Turlock. Alfredo Mirandé’s new book, titled “Jalos USA: Transnational Community and Identity” (University of Notre Dame Press) also examines the ability of these migrants to stay connected to their native roots, and how that facilitates success in the United States.

Driving along Monte Vista Avenue, some may question the extra label on road signs reading “University Way.” The University Way moniker was adopted by the Turlock City Council in 2007 and new signs were put up that same year. University Way only stands as an honorary street name, and the street remains called Monte Vista Avenue. But California State University, Stanislaus now dons the address of One University Circle, rather than 801 Monte Vista Ave.

Around Turlock – June 17

Firework stands are beginning to pop up around Turlock. This Phantom Fireworks stand is located on the corner of Crowell Road and Monte Vista Avenue, in the Rite-Aid shopping center. The stand isn’t selling fireworks just yet, but could become a hot spot after Don Pedro Recreation Agency announced that the annual Fourth of July firework show at the lake is cancelled this year.
