Monday’s heat couldn’t stop these guys from getting in a few football reps at California State University, Stanislaus. Weather.com reports that Turlock hit a high of 105 degrees at 4:05 p.m., around the same time the team was practicing. Their dedication would make Turlock-native Colin Kaepernick proud, but let’s hope they stayed hydrated.

Brett Nichols to be Honored at Turlock City Council Meeting

Brett Nichols, Pitman High School’s “King of Pop” will be presented with an official proclamation from the Turlock City Council on Tuesday. The proclamation will be read by Turlock Mayor John Lazar. It tells the story of how Nichols became interested in Michael Jackson’s work at an early age, first performed a Jackson dance routine at a Walnut Elementary School Talent Show, then took his show to the Pitman High School Talent Rally, which he won with his routine to “Billie Jean.”

Around Turlock – June 8

The corner that used to be filled many of the names found on the 2014 Gubernatorial Primary Election ballot has since been cleared out. Only a U.S. Rep. Jeff Denham (R) sign, Michael Eggman (D) sign, and very small Amy Bublak for Stanislaus County Assessor remain on the northeast corner of Monte Vista Avenue and Geer Road.

Around Turlock – June 7

Turlock’s newest Mexican restaurant held its grand opening Saturday, but it wasn’t the long awaited Memo’s Cocina. Mary’s Taqueria, located at 218 W. Olive Ave., has everything you’d expect from a Turlock taqueria, and even serve menudo and pozole on the weekends. The new taqueria is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Sunday. Breakfast is served until 11 a.m.

Around Turlock – June 6

Drivers headed down Crowell Road no longer have to yield to oncoming traffic or wait for students to cross before making a left-hand turn onto Monte Vista Avenue. New traffic signals with turn arrows were installed at the intersection of Crowell Road and Monte Vista Avenue to alleviate some headaches for drivers. The new signal will also greatly benefit drivers traveling southbound on Crowell Road, who previously had to wait for vehicles to turn left before they could continue straight through the intersection because there is no designated turn lane.

52 Girl Scouts, 3 of Turlock to Receive Gold Award

52 local Girl Scouts, including three from Turlock, will earn the Girl Scout Gold Award on Sunday for making an impact in their respective communities. To earn the Girl Scout Gold Award–the highest award in Girl Scouts–girls must address a community issues with a sustainable solution to the root cause. One girl addressed the issue of poverty and hunger by organizing a student to provide support for more than 1,000 students in need.
