There are several areas around Turlock where traffic remains snarled due to construction. Monte Vista Avenue between Crowell and Geer roads is still under construction. A portion of Golden State Boulevard remains cut down to one lane due to construction. Now, add Monte Vista Crossings to that list.

CSU Stanislaus Offers Summer Reading Skills Classes

The California State University, Stanislaus Extended Education program will offer Summer Reading Skills courses for children as young as 4  to up to those entering the 10th grade. Individualized programs include support from a professional reading teacher, materials, independent reading, books and engaging online instruction. Students will learn phonics, comprehension, fluency, study skills, speed reading and ultimately the love of reading.

Turlock School Board to Honor Retiring Educators

The Turlock Unified School District will recognize 17 retiring teachers, administrators, and staff during a public meeting at 6:30 p.m. May 6, at the TUSD Professional Development Center, 100 Cahill Ave. Closed session convene at 6 p.m. to discuss labor negotiations with the Turlock Teachers Association and various other bargaining units. The public meeting will kick off with an inspirational message and flag salute from Roselawn High School students James Wernert and Jonathan Miller, this month’s Character Counts Students of the Month for the character trait of caring.

We Care Program Wraps Up Shelter Season, Acknowledges Challenges, Successes

The We Care Program announced last month that its year-round transitional housing program has housed two men and is in the process of housing three more. The shelter also released the number of total beds and nights the program has offered since 2003. To date, the program has hosted 12 seasons of shelter services with a peak of 266 unduplicated shelter guests from Nov. 21, 2006 to April 30, 2007. That season also saw the greatest amount of shelter nights, at 8,495.

Turlock Certified Farmer’s Market opened on Friday and Turlockers came out in large numbers to pick up coffee, meat, and eggs, all of which are available for the first time this year. A sunny Friday was perfect for families and friends who wanted to pick up some produce, or just hang out.
