Around Turlock – December 4

The Turlock Unified School District has begun its Tree Removal Project at the District Office on Canal Drive to remove 22 dying elm trees. Many of the trees had become hallowed in the middle due to fungus and ants over the years. TUSD plans to replant new trees in the place of the elm trees, which could have been planted in the 1940 or 50s.

Stanislaus County Fair Yanks Alcohol Sales from Local Non-Profits

The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Active 20-30 Club of Turlock and the FACT Club (Families Activities Community Turlock) organizations, which support youth and veterans, will have to find news ways to make large portions of their budgets thanks to a controversial decision by the Stanislaus County Fair. The Stanislaus County Fair Board and CEO Chris Borovansky are taking heat after it was learned they had made the decision to terminate year-to-year alcohol sale profit agreements with the three non-profit organizations — all of which depend on the fair to make up large portions of their annual budgets to serve the community of Turlock.

Some much needed rain in Turlock on Tuesday made way for some flooding near Downtown Turlock. A portion of Julian Street, between North Broadway Avenue and North First Street, was one of several streets experiencing some flooding.

Community Raises Over $15,000 to Aid Family Who Lost Their Home to Fire

In the past three days the Turlock and Denair communities, as well as people from other cities like Pleasanton, Atwater, Fresno and Modesto, have rallied to the aid of Jeff and Laura Long and their four small children, who lost their home to fire on Thanksgiving Eve. A GoFundMe account was set up for the Long’s by family friend Brooke Bettencourt, who was contacted by TurlockCityNews.com, and within one day monetary donations skyrocketed from about $2,815 to 132 total donations for a whopping $15,835 as of 7 p.m. tonight.
