A family of three was displaced from a Turlock home last Friday evening, after a fire broke out in the garage of their 1265 Glasgow St. residence.
Two passersby attempted to extinguish a fire in a detached storage shed on Friday, taking immediate action to stop the spreading flames before the Turlock Fire Department arrived.
Turlock Unified School District students scored slightly lower on the the annual Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) assessment in 2013, reflecting a statewide slip of a fraction of a percentage point. Although scores saw a slight drop from last year, the majority of TUSD students continued to achieve at the proficient or advanced level in math and English language arts.
Last week, a Turlock woman woke up to find used syringes in her front lawn. After posting a photo of the needles on the Turlock Neighborhood Watch Facebook page, she found that she was not alone. Another woman said that her mother-in-law had found two used syringes in her mailbox last week as well. Two others came forth on the same post saying they had also found used syringes recently.
After learning of a Modesto family who lost their home and belongings during a July 31 fire, Turlockers united via social media to collect household goods, clothing and other items for the family of four. A donation event, held at 6 p.m. Monday at the Pitman High School parking lot, was scheduled by Turlock Neighborhood Watch Facebook page founder Dani Love and her friend Marissa Romero in response to learning of the family’s loss.
After months of anticipation Turlock's first Walmart Neighborhood Market opened its doors at 2480 Geer Rd. early Wednesday morning, drawing in hundreds of eager customers ready to see what the new store had to offer. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, where store manager Everton Lira and Walmart employees welcomed the public to the store. During the ceremony, Walmart presented approximately $8,000 in grants to local community groups, including the Turlock Education Foundation, Turlock Police Activities League, the City of Turlock Parks and Recreation Department, the Haven Women's Center of Stanislaus County, United Samaritans Foundation, and the Connecting Point Church of the Nazarene.
At just 19 years of age, recent Hilmar High School graduate and lifelong dancer Karly Barker passed away last Tuesday due to a brain aneurysm. In Karly's honor, the Backstage Academy of Dance will hold benefit classes on Monday to create a scholarship in her name.

Local retirement community Covenant Village recently announced the addition of two executives to its leadership team. As the newly appointed Assistant Executive Director, Charles W. Johnson will collaborate with, and report to, Covenant Village Executive Director Bob Howell. In his new position, Johnson will manage residential and assisted living operations.
Three teenagers were held at gunpoint in the parking lot of a Turlock Taco Bell early Sunday morning while a man demanded money from them. Turlock Police officers responded to the Taco Bell parking lot located at 2050 W. Main St. after receiving a call regarding a holdup involving three teenagers.
