More than 130 students from 17 Stanislaus County junior high schools, including Turlock Junior High and Dutcher Middle School, participated in the Fifth Annual PHAST Boot Tobacco Camp Tuesday at the Martin Peterson Event Center in Modesto. The Stanislaus County Office of Education, in partnership with Stanislaus County Health Services Agency, California Youth Advocacy Network and Stanislaus County’s Tobacco Control Program, hosted the event.

Turlock area farmers and city residents are still praying for rain as summer slowly begins to turn into fall. According to Turlock Irrigation District spokesperson Calvin Curtin, water flow from the Tuolumne River, which TID draws its water from, is at 31 percent of the 50-year average and the Don Pedro Reservoir is at about 40 percent of normal storage capacity.
September is full of fun and free activities at the Turlock Library, located at 550 Minaret Ave. On Sept. 9 children of school ages can visit the library at 3:30 p.m. to decorate pencil boxes and supply containers for school or home use. The library will provide empty VHS boxes, which can be transformed into personalized supply containers. The library will provide all the materials, participants just need to provide the imagination.

Many are familiar with the pink ribbons for breast cancer awareness, but few know about the gold ribbons that are the international symbol for childhood cancer awareness. September is recognized as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month across the United States, and at least one Turlock family is going gold for the month.
While the Wendy’s, located at 2395 Geer Rd., received a fairly recent remodel indoors, it still remains in the same old building. Neighboring fast food restaurants, including McDonald’s and Burger King, have both been rebuilt and built, respectively, in recent years, while the neon signs at Wendy’s go out.
