A free electronic waste recycling event was held over the weekend in the Valley View Center, located on the corner of Monte Vista Avenue and Geer Road. Turlockers dropped off their old TVs, appliances, computers, and even a treadmill during the free event, and the large stacks of e-waste could be seen from passersby on Geer Road.

Walnut Elementary School Teacher Earns Presidential Honors

Bret Sutterley, a fifth-grade teacher at Walnut Elementary School, has been named the Presidential Innovation Award for Environmental Educators (PIAEE) winner for 2014 by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the White House Council on Environmental Quality. The PIAEE recognizes outstanding kindergarten to 12th-grade teachers who employ innovative approaches to environmental education and use the environment as a context for student learning.

Many signs posted on Geer Road prohibit “cruising” along the busy road, although the signs may be a little outdated. The Turlock Municipal Code (4-14-101[a]) defines cruising as, “the repetitive driving of any motor vehicle past a traffic control point in traffic that is congested at or near the traffic control point on the public streets, alleys, or highways of the City of Turlock, as determined by the ranking peace officer on duty within the affected area, within a specified time period and after the vehicle operator has been given an adequate written notice that further driving past the control point will be a violation of this article.”

Speed bumps are placed in neighborhoods that get heavy traffic, forcing speedsters to slow down on those busy streets and keep people safe. At the same time, some drivers may find the bumps a little annoying. These speed bumps, located on East Springer Drive between Fosberg Road and Olive Avenue, are just one example of the safety measure found around Turlock; Tuolumne Road and Minnesota Avenue are also littered with speed bumps.

The American Field Service (AFS) Intercultural Programs is looking for Turlock families who will host AFS Exchange Students arriving this September. These high school students are eager to attend local high schools, live with a host family and discover America for themselves — but to do so, they need need supportive families to host them for 6-12 weeks, a semester or the year.
