Search for Burglar Locks-down Turlock Daycare

An attempted burglary led to the lock-down of a Turlock daycare Monday afternoon, as police searched the neighborhood for a man they believed to be a suspect – but who ended up being unrelated to the crime.

The ordeal began when a burglary was reported in the 3500 block of Crowell Road. The victim came home and interrupted the burglar, police say, scaring him away.

As officers arrived near the scene, they saw a man jumping fences in the 2700 block of North Walnut Road, about a mile away.

Believing the man might be the suspect from the Crowell Road burglary, officers called for back-up. A total of five police cars and two motorcycles arrived on scene, with some officers brandishing rifles.

The incident occurred next door to Turlock's A Special Place School preschool and daycare, and around the corner from Brown Elementary School. According to A Special Place staff, the daycare was put on lock-down, as armed police officers guarded the parking lot.

But when the man was found, he was deemed unrelated to the burglary and the lock-down was lifted.

“It is unknown why he seemed to be avoiding police,” said Sgt. Stephen Webb, Turlock Police Department Spokesperson.

Turlock police are still searching for the Crowell Road burglar.
