At about 5:52pm Monday evening, Turlock Police, Turlock Fire, and American Medical Response responded to a hit and run with injuries that had just occurred in the 3000 block of W. Christoffersen Parkway.

When units arrived on scene, they found a man later identified as Shane Hurst, 33, of Turlock, lying unresponsive in the center median with severe head trauma.

An air ambulance was requested, however, they refused to respond due to bad weather. Hurst ended up being ground transported by American Medical Response to Emanuel Medical Center, where he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.

Witnesses described the responsible vehicle as a light-colored Hummer H2, believed to be a 2003-2009 model year. It was last seen fleeing eastbound on W. Christoffersen Parkway immediately after the collision and is believed to have damage to its front driver side.

Members of the police department’s Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) were called out to the scene to take over the investigation, resulting in the roadway being closed for nearly six hours as they canvassed the area, gathered evidence and measurements, and attempted to locate surveillance video.

MAIT investigators are examining evidence and reviewing witness statements to determine exactly what transpired, however, so far, they believe that Hurst was walking his bicycle across the eastbound W. Christoffersen Parkway lanes on his way home when the collision occurred.

“This investigation is a top priority for the Traffic Safety Unit,” said Turlock Police Officer Michael Simbalenko. “I ask that anyone who may have information about the identity of the responsible suspect or who may have seen the light-colored Hummer, to please contact the Traffic Safety Unit,” he continued.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information that could assist in it is encouraged to call Officer Michael Simbalenko at 209-668-6523.
