Ever wonder how a children’s book gets illustrated?

Today, children’s book author and illustrator Doug Hansen will be at the Carnegie Arts Center in Turlock to demonstrate the skill, and to talk about what exactly illustrators do.

Each month, the Carnegie Arts Center holds a Family Friday event where kids and adults can spend time together while learning about a specific art skill. With this month’s theme being illustration, Hansen will discuss how he makes a picture and where he gets his inspiration for his books.

Hansen, who recently published his collection “Aesop in California,” is a Central Valley native, born and raised in Fresno. With a wide range of artistic experience, Hansen has worked as a Fresno Bee newsroom artist, a freelance illustrator, and a cartoonist.

“Aesop in California” uses plants, animals and places of California to retell timeless and familiar fables from ancient Greece. The book not only features beautifully illustrated stories that stimulate the imagination, but also teaches important lessons to children.

“Combining extensive research, photographic field trips and some poetic license, Hansen has delivered a superbly satisfying storybook,” said an LA Parent Magazine review of Hansen’s “Aesop in California.”

Before publishing his own books, Hansen illustrated David Mas Masumoto’s books “Letters to the Valley,” “A Harvest of Memories and Heirlooms,” “Letters from a Peach Farmer,” and “Mother Goose in California.”

Aside from illustrating and writing his own children’s books, Hansen teaches rendering and illustration at his alma mater, California State University, Fresno.

Copies of Hansen’s books will be available for purchase and signing at the event, which begins at 7 p.m. Friday. The event will be held at the Carnegie Arts Center, located at 250 N. Broadway in Turlock.

The event is free, as part of the Carnegie’s Family Friday series of monthly programs designed to provide fun, educational and creative activities for families. All Family Friday events are sponsored by Off Center Thrift and Gift in Turlock.
